When the James Butler Bonham trophy was being discussed as an annual trophy to be awarded to the winner of the University of South Carolina – Texas A&M game, Coach Steve Spurrier of USC indicated he didn’t know who Bonham was.

Coach Spurrier is not alone. The man revered by history-loving Texans as almost a saint is a stranger to most South Carolinians including many in his native Saluda County – formerly a part of Edgefield County.

The Saluda County Historical Society would like to welcome you to Flat Grove, the birthplace of Alamo hero James Butler Bonham. The exterior of the house has been restored, and we are in the process of cleaning and restoring the interior. Some of the rooms have been furnished with period furniture. Come see what life would have been like for the Bonhams in the early 1800s.

Tours start at the Saluda County Museum --105 Law Range in Saluda. A diorama of the Alamo and other items relating to the Alamo and to the Bonhams are on display. A guide will lead you to the Bonham House. The tour will cost $5.00 per person for adults and $3.00 for seniors and school age children.

Flat Grove was the birthplace of Alamo hero James Butler Bonham. In 1989, Edwin Matthews deeded Flat Grove to the Saluda County Historical Society. It had been vacant for several decades and was literally falling in. Two rooms were already on the ground.

The Sunday afternoon was cheerful and sunny when members and guests of the Saluda County Historical Society met for its annual “Taste It” at Flat Grove, the boyhood home of Alamo Hero James Butler Bonham. Everyone was seated in the front parlor when to our delight – Sophia Smith Bonham, entered from a bedroom and began packing a little worn trunk and then started talking to us, and we could hear!
